Better Way - The Art of Living Soulfully
Wed 13th to Wed 20th May 2020

‘Soul’ is a confusing term – commonly bandied about in religious circles but seldom defined or much understood. It’s also used in psychology, and popular culture where for example music, art, conversations, food, friendships, habits and rituals may be considered soulful.

Perhaps the great dilemma of our times is a ‘loss of soul’ – a dislocation from our deepest selves, from compassion, from nature – ultimately, from the divine. Yet when soul is neglected, it doesn’t simply go away; it appears in obsessions, addictions, aggression, and loss of meaning.

Drawing on music, art, poetry and biblical imagination this retreat will consider, not only the meaning of soul in theological and cultural terms, but importantly, explore tangible ways to foster soulfulness in ordinary everyday life, and in our world.

St EthelbuirgaDave is an Anglican priest, and chaplain to the St Ethelburga’s Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. He holds a Master’s degree in Biblical Hermeneutics, and is the author of many books including How to be a Bad Christian - and a better human being and Black Sheep and Prodigals – an antidote to black and white religion.
Dave also regularly contributes to Radio 2’s ‘Pause for Thought’.

Simple Trust, Sabbath Rest
Wed 3rd to Wed 10th June 2020

When the signs of the times are ominous and the complexities of existence demand attention how do we hold on to our vision of God? Can the still dews
of quietness still drop upon us as the hymn writer expects? This retreat begins in the week of Pentecost: a wonderful time to relax, rest, reflect and play and chance upon some guidance from the Lord and Giver of Life.

Simple TrustJohn Rackley writes: when I visited Lake Trasimeno on my last Umbrian Retreat I found myself singing Whittier’s hymn and have wanted to return there with other seekers after the silence of eternity and enjoy the lakeside breezes. This retreat gives us that opportunity. I am hopeful that we might encounter some Franciscan breezes along the way too which will lead us into the way of courage and humility.

John Rackley is an Associate Minister at Christchurch a Baptist/Methodist LEP in Leicester. He is currently working on a project which considers the relationship of faith to our life story.

During this holiday retreat, day visits to Assisi and Lago Trasimeno will be arranged.See www.umbrianretreats.comfor details of accommodation.

Seeing the Light in Life
…through photography, mindfulness and Ignatian spirituality

Wed 2nd to Wed 9th September 2020

“Let there be light” God saw the light was good and separated the light from the darkness.  It’s the interplay of light and darkness which creates beauty and mystery. This interplay forms the basis of photography.
Revd Steve Radley, a former RAF chaplain, Anglican Priest and professionally trained photographer, found healing from some of his experiences of war through photography. In this retreat Steve will share how your smartphone or camera can be used to explore the God who dwells in darkness and light, prayerfully helping see life and God in new ways.

let there be light
Scripture, mindfulness meditation, Ignatian spirituality and our cameras will be used throughout the week, but you donot need to be an accomplished photographer as our focus is not on the technical aspects of photography but rather, how any camera can help us see in new ways. You will need to bring a camera to participate but this can be either a smartphone or larger camera you enjoy using.

“A single sunbeam”
Exploring the life and legacy of St Francis of Assisi
Wed 23rd to Wed 30th September 2020

This seven day retreat will take you on a journey through the life of St Francis, and into the heart of his faith. Together we will discover what it meant for Francis to be a disciple of Jesus, and how that found expression in peacefulness, prayer, simplicity and service. What can we learn from this humble man, possibly the most well-known and well-loved of all the saints?

St FrancisCombining times of learning, prayer and worship with visits to some of the iconic places in Francis’ life, we hope this retreat will both surprise and inspire you in your own spiritual journey. There will be opportunities for individual discussion and guidance, as well as plenty of space for quiet reflection.

The retreat leader is the Revd Sharon Grenham-Thompson, an Anglican parish priest, author and radio broadcaster. In 2018 she presented a week of worship programmes on Radio 4 based on the life of St Francis. Sharon has been ordained for 22 years, and her ministry has included working as a full-time prison chaplain.
Revd Richard Thompson, who will act as chaplain during the retreat, is a professed member of the Third (Lay) Order of St Francis. He has been ordained for over 30 years, 20 of which were as a full-time prison chaplain.

During this holiday retreat, day visits to Assisi and other Franciscan sites will be arranged. See www.umbrianretreats.comfor details of accommodation.
